Living In Gratitude: Laughter

Laughter is important, not only because if makes us happy, it also has health benefits. And that’s because laughter completely engages the body and releases the mind. It connects us to others, and that in itself has a healing effect. ~Marlo Thomas

There is nothing quite as enjoyable or amazing as laughter. The ability to laugh is an incredible gift. Laughter doesn’t need to be learned, it’s an innate ability that we all possess, from the youngest baby to the oldest adult. As Charles Dickens once said, “There is nothing in the world for irresistibly contagious as laughter and good humor.

Laughter takes many forms, from a giggle to the full-blown, doubled-over, can’t breathe belly laugh. Laughing allows us to let go of our stress and tension, release anxiety and live in the moment. Laughing is therapeutic and lifts our spirits. In addition to being the best medicine, its also an instant vacation!

Our ability laugh allows us to see the humor in life, even when things may not be going our way. Laughter helps alleviate pain and sadness and can help heal emotional wounds. Hearty laughter offers an improved quality of life, helping us see the positive, encourages us to be more relaxed, boost our immune system and helps us sleep better.

One should take good care not to grow too wise for so great a pleasure of life as laughter. ~Joseph Addison

Laughter is the perfect prescription for deepening our social connections, bringing us closer to family and friends. It is a universal language spoken by all human beings that creates companionship.

There are many people who possess the talent of being able to make us laugh. From our favorite late night talk show hosts both past and present like Jimmy Fallon, Johnny Carson and David Letterman to the rich tapestry of stand up comics and comedic actors, the opportunity to laugh is always available. Seek out those who make you smile, giggle, chuckle, guffaw, chortle and laugh hysterically.

I love people who make me laugh. I honestly think it’s the thing I like most, to laugh. It cures a multitude of ills. It’s probably the most important thing in a person. ~Audrey Hepbrun
