Living in Gratitude: You Wouldn’t Worry So Much

You wouldn’t worry so much about what others think if you realized how seldom they do. ~Eleanor Roosevelt

Many of us live our lives wondering what other people will think of us if we (fill in the blank).

That ‘blank’ can be just about anything: what we wear, the kind of job we have, if we buy the neighbor’s daughter’s Girl Scout cookies or not, how we eat, if we are overweight or too thin…

And the list goes on. Read more

Living In Gratitude: Happiness

Happiness cannot be traveled to, owned, earned, worn or consumed.

Happiness is the spiritual experience of living every minute with love, grace and gratitude.”

~Denis Waitley

Happiness isn’t a material thing or even a place. We can’t purchase it and we can’t hop in a car or on a plane and go there.

Happiness comes from within. It is something we alone can create for ourselves. No one else in life is responsible for our happiness, nor are we responsible for theirs.  Read more

Ode To My Socks

Mara Mori brought me
 a pair of socks
 which she knitted herself
 with her sheepherder’s hands,
two socks as soft as rabbits.
I slipped my feet into them
as if they were two cases
knitted with threads of twilight and goatskin,
violet socks,
my feet were two fish made of wool,
two long sharks
 sea blue, shot through
 by one golden thread,
two immense blackbirds,
two cannons,
my feet were honored in this way
 by these heavenly socks.

Living In Gratitude: Worry Is A Misuse Of Imagination

Our imaginations are such an incredible gift, allowing us to daydream and envision incredible wonder.

As children, we used our vivid imaginations to create fun and exciting playmates and spectacularly fantastical situations in which we would ‘live’ for hours on end. Imagination was fun, funny and adventurous.

As adults, our imaginations often become a work-thing of worry. Read more

Living In Gratitude: Our Past Is Perfect

We’ve all made mistakes or failed at something. Most likely, quite a few things.  While some people allow these perceived failures to become roadblocks, preventing them from achieving success or moving forward in life, “Chicken Soup for the Soul” co-creator Jack Canfield believes we should look at these ‘missteps’ in a different light.

As written in his book, The Success Principles, “your past has actually been ‘perfect,’ because it has all led to this marked moment in your life, when you are on the verge of gaining more knowledge.”  This concept of a “perfect” past applies to each and every one of us because we’ve always done the best we could with what we knew at the time. Even when we’ve made mistakes. Read more

Teaching Gratitude To Children Part 1

The word “appreciation” means really seeing something for what it is- an awareness of how special, how lucky, how unique, how blessed, how big, wonderful or awesome something is. Appreciation is a recognition not based on comparison, but based on the intrinsic value, character or immensity of a thing or state itself.

Some people are born “appreciators”. These people see the world at its essence:

  • the beauty of a sunset
  • the fragile green of a leaf
  • the boundless energy of a small child

Others must be helped to learn to see the beauty and wonder in the world. Read more

Living In Gratitude: What Makes You Thankful

It’s not what you have in your pocket that makes you thankful, but what you have in your heart.

Often, we look at the things we possess in order to gauge our gratitude. Of course, we should appreciate these material things – our home that provides shelter, our car that easily gets us places we need to go, the clothing that keeps us warm. Read more

Living In Gratitude: Interrupt Worry

Interrupt worry with gratitude.

We all have moments, or even days, when worry seems all-consuming. Sometimes, we worry about important things-our health, our finances, our family, our careers. Other times, we spend time worrying about little things, many of which, when we really consider it, don’t matter much in the grand scheme of life. Read more
