Living In Gratitude: Simply Grateful for Today

Each day, we have 24 hours. That equal 1,400 minutes or 86,400 seconds. Throughout each precious day, we make choices on our attitude, our behavior, our thoughts, actions and words.  These can be hurtful or helpful, both to ourselves and others. During each of those 86,400 seconds, we choose.

Make the choice to simply be grateful for today. Notice how that gratitude spirals both outward and inward, embracing others as well as lifting us up as well.

Buddhist monks begin every day with a gratitude meditation. This helps to awaken their joy, kindness and compassion in spite of everything, reminding them of the blessings of being alive.

To add this to your morning ritual, find a quiet place where you can relax. This could be lying in bed before you rise, sitting in your favorite chair or during a morning walk. Focus on your breath. Allow your mind to be clear, your heart open, your body at ease. Recite each line out loud or to yourself.

simply grateful for today

With gratitude I remember the people, animals, plants, insects, creatures of the sky and sea, air and water, fire and earth, all whose joyful exertion bless my life every day.

With gratitude I remember the care and labor of a thousand generations of elders and ancestors who came before me.

I offer my gratitude for the safety and well-being I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the blessing of this earth I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the measure of health I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the family and friends I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the community I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the teachings and lessons I have been given.

I offer my gratitude for the life I have been given.

Just as a morning cup of coffee helps get our body energized, this meditation allows our hearts and minds to open, acknowledging all of our blessings and the wonder around us so we can be simply grateful for today.

May your day be filled with gratitude and good things.
